Bioinformatics is a branch of biotechnology that uses computer technology and other methods to manage and analyze biological data. Those who hold a master's degree in bioinformatics typically use a combination of mathematics, statistics, computer science and biological research data to further scientific studies. One example of a large-scale bioinformatics project is the Human Genome Project. Job titles vary by specialization, but most positions require similar job duties. Examples of these duties include conducting research, creating algorithms and designing databases to increase information processing efficiency.

Bioinformatics Analyst

Bioinformatics analysts often find work in laboratories or research facilities. Employment opportunities are found with the federal government, pharmaceutical companies, state governments and educational institutions. Primary job duties for bioinformatics analysts include conducting research, organizing data, maintaining databases and ensuring that proper quality assurance protocols are adhered to for the duration of the project. As an example, bioinformatics analysts are studying research data from the Human Genome Project to determine the pairs that create DNA, in hopes of developing cures for human diseases.

Pharmaceutical Scientist

Pharmaceutical scientists are responsible for discovering and developing new medications for drug companies. Much of a pharmaceutical scientist's work is done in a laboratory where he studies different compounds and molecules to determine how they interact with the human body. By studying the different reactions of these compounds and molecules, pharmaceutical scientists are able to get a better understanding of what causes diseases in the human body, along with the information needed to develop potential treatments.

Bioinformatics Technician

Bioinformatics technicians use computers to analyze and track data related specifically to biological functions and activities. The goal is to gain a better understanding of how complex biological processes work by analyzing DNA and the characteristics of cells. On the job, bioinformatics technicians typically work under the direction of other scientists. Another job duty of bioinformatics technicians is to gather experimental data together and organize it into a more user-friendly database. This way, the scientists and other people working on the project have easier access to the data and can utilize it in a more efficient manner.

Biostatistician

Biostatisticians work within the biomedical field. They are responsible for analyzing environmental conditions and medical treatments on living organisms. The healthcare industry hires biostatisticians in both the private and public sectors. In the public sector, government agencies typically hire biostatisticians to conduct research. In the private sector, pharmaceutical companies hire them to set new statistical parameters for drug studies. Depending on the type of position, biostatisticians can find themselves working in an office or out in the field.
